I have always like wildlife. Which means, I will go out of my way to see the cute, the ugly and the unique in the animal world. And I always bring in whoever is close to see. Heyyy, #2, look, a fox, its a fox. see?
The family understands me with this. They understand that I will sometimes stop the car to move a turtle to the side of the road (if I can do so safely-and the snapping turtle wasn't such a good idea). I will stop and take pictures. I will not scare off raccoons, skunks (well, who in their right mind will scare a skunk?!?), birds, snakes (yeah, snakes . . . unless the kids are little, then I will ask MainMan to relocate said snake), etc.
I like seeing new animals. I was amazed when I saw my first wild turkey. I mean, in the yard and everything. We had a lot of wildlife in our yard at times in St. Louis-especially during floods or really hot spells. Yep, deer, fox, bunnies (not at the same time), hawks, a wolf (once), etc. Always gives me a little happy moment. Yeah, simple things make me smile.
Today, I was on my way to grab a quick item from the store. One thing-in and out. But to get to Bahblahs I had to go a short distance on the service road next to the freeway. Half a block. And on the side of the road, in the grass, next to trees was a . . . (are you ready?) a beaver. A real wild beaver. Just sitting there, snacking on grass or whatever. I slowed down to look. Yep, I am sure the 10 cars behind me loved that. I wish I had my camera.
Now, I have seen beavers in zoos, in pictures, etc. But NEVER just sitting on the side of the road. Ok, he was was not right next to the road-he was a bit back near the trees and grass, but he wasn't swimming in a pond or stream building a dam. Isn't that what they are supposed to do?
So, here is my take on the beaver-nice fur, and bigger than I thought. Welcome to Canada, the country of beavers!
The original video of this beaver was shot 6 months ago, TWO minutes away from our new house. Small world. Hey, maybe the beaver I saw today is a second cousin of this guy!
