MainMan caught a fishy

Hey, #2 and I aren't the only ones fishing. MainMan came out to the dock tonight and caught a fish.

MainMan's fish. He got to go back into the lake.

But before he came out . . . I caught something. Something serious. Mean. Big. Scary.

I caught an eel. No kidding. It was big, too. While I want to say3 feet, it was probably 2 feet. It was big and heavy. The neighbor was leaning over the fence a couple houses away and said, weell, you gotcha an eel. An eel? Like a real eel? Like a big one? It was pretty heavy but I got it on the dock. I tried to call the kids but they didn't hear me. So I was going to walk it up to the house. The line broke (my line wasn't heavy enough) and the eel fell on the dock and got very close to me. At this point, I let out a scream, and the neighbor laughed. The eel flopped about for a little while and ended up back in the lake . . cause I was NOT going to pick it up.

Honestly, it was the largest fish type thing I have ever caught in fresh water. Now, at this point, I have to point out that the eels live in the ocean for most of their lives and then swim up the river. So, I guess its not a true fresh water thing. But, it was in fresh water and I caught it, so it counts. :)

it sounds like you are all enjoying living on the lake. eels are nasty looking things but tman loves them chopped up in his sushi. i am not making that up.

Seems obvious why you were the one to catch the eel: 1st your reactions are much more interesting than the men-folk and 2nd since it's an American eel...

Wow, that's kinda creepy, I don't think I would have wanted to touch it either.

That's cool you're having so much success though!

Hi guys - nice fishing!

I don't know what your website said for cleaning catfish but what WE (my two brothers and I) would do would #1 find a stump, a hammer, a pr of pliers, and a big nail. #2 Put catfish on stump drive nail through head, cut skin around head, grab skin with pliers and pull skin off, then do your gutting... #3 fry em up!

As for the other fish you have there I see a black crappie - probably one of the BEST eating fish anywhere! If you catch one cast right back where you caught it and catch another - your limit will be around 25 to 50. Fantastic filleted!

Next is a Yellow Perch another great eater - and with a limit of 25-50.

After that is a pumpkinseed/sunfish... we always let those go....

By the way it looks like eel is a delicacy when its smoked - yum yum!

Thanks Nol! That really helped.

Your way of cleaning catfish is how I was taught, except it was a big piece of wood instead of a stump. But there is a way I have found online that looks promising.

I thought that might have been a small mouth bass but it is not the same coloring I am used to seeing and it didn't fight like I would have expected.

The crappie was darker than what I have caught in the past (remember, I fished a lot as a child and a little in Missouri so my experience is from the southern states).

The first eel I caught was a completely different color than the one in the pictures- and a LOT bigger. It was silver with a white stomach. And BIG-did I say that already? Oh yeah, but let me say it again-big! Yuck!

What size is a keeper for the perch? I don't seem to be getting very big ones, maybe 6-7 inches.

I got a pike the other day-nice teeth. The neighbor caught something he called yellow eye (or was that red eye?). It was silverish. He also got a walleye but I didn't see it. I wonder if it is the same walleye I used to troll for in a big, deep lake in northern Georgia.

Oh, and back to the eel, tell ya what. We will hold off the smoking of eel until YOU come and catch, clean and process it. :)

I believe there are Black and White Crappy, but I'd have to talk to my uncle on that one....
A record perch is 12 inches... I always liked them bigger than 8 myself for cleaning purposes but they all taste good...
Yellow Eye/Walleye/Sauger are all kind of the same fish, but their maybe local distinctions I don't know of...
Pike are great fried in butter - but you'll wan tto find out how to fillet them as they do have tricky "Y" bones...
AND I can't wait to come and catch, clean, and smoke some eel - yum yum!
